‘iosonovulnerabile’ is an important opportunity to reflect, raise awareness, and above all take stock of the actions that we must continue to implement together in order to ensure that every person can fully live the life of our communities. Art and culture can truly do a great deal and enable the exploration of new forms of expression; they are essential in promoting the new approach we are advancing, which asks us to begin seeing each person in terms of potential rather than limits. The issue of inclusion is increasingly central, and I believe this is the right moment to highlight how much can be achieved if we truly believe in it. It is a moment of change, a major challenge to continue with determination and unity, and to guarantee everyone the right to full participation in the civic, social, and political life of our country.

‘iosonovulnerabile’ is a successful example of collaboration between public institutions and non-profit organizations working to promote and disseminate knowledge of cultural heritage and to ensure access to art for a wider public.

The central theme around which the entire cultural project ‘iosonovulnerabile’ revolves is vulnerability, which can be expressed aesthetically and across many dimensions. Art has the mythopoetic capacity to transform this vulnerability – degradation, discomfort, suffering, and solitude – into beauty. As curator Illuminato writes: «art is not a luxury, but a vital necessity».

The ‘iosonovulnerabile’ research stems from the acceptance of an undeniable reality: recognizing vulnerability as a constitutive factor of human nature. Through awareness of being fragile and limited universes, far from any aspiration to perfection, failure and error become fundamental qualities for personal and collective growth, generating supportive communities and deepening our understanding of the dynamics and questions of existence.

The ‘iosonovulnerabile’ initiative has not only artistic but also social value: art is a powerful universal language capable of stimulating reflection and raising awareness on important issues that also concern the existential sphere. The setting of MAXXI and the involvement of students and technicians in the artistic initiative add further value to a project that contributes to enhancing the artistic landscape of our Region.

Rome has a rich cultural heritage and a history that makes it the perfect place to welcome new artistic avant-gardes. With ‘iosonovulnerabile’ and its curator Sergio Mario Illuminato, we hope to open new creative dialogues, inspiring a profound rethinking not only of art but also of human vulnerability and historical memory. I believe this project can foster the emergence of new experiences and reflections, strengthening Rome’s role as a cultural capital open to innovation.

MUNICIPALITY OF VELLETRI

We witness the rebirth of the former Pontifical Prison of Velletri thanks to art. It is culture and art itself that allow us to understand, to open our eyes to what has been and what can become. Thanks to ‘iosonovulnerabile’ and Sergio Mario Illuminato, the history of this building comes back to life.

ACADEMY OF FINE ARTS OF ROME

Sergio Mario Illuminato’s initiative, which also involves many students, seems to reaffirm that art and education are the true antidote to an increasingly dehumanized world. Igniting a spark of knowledge in a young person today is a revolutionary act. Teaching is a nearly sacred choice.
